Fighting Irish visit Cardinals in key Big East clash

Feb 28, 2008 / By Rob Gerein

The No. 17 Notre Dame Fighting Irish visit the No. 13 Louisville Cardinals in a key clash of Big East rivals Thursday night.

The Cardinals are favored by 7½ points at Betmaker, while the over/under total is 143.

Louisville (12-3 Big East) sits second in the conference, a half game back of the No. 10 Georgetown Hoyas, while Notre Dame (11-3 Big East) is a half game behind Louisville, and one back of the Hoyas.

The Cardinals have won seven straight games while the Irish have won three straight and eight of their past nine.

Louisville leads the all-time series with Notre Dame 13-8 SU. The Irish have struggled at Freedom Hall over the years and have lost their past seven matchups there, including the past four straight to the Cardinals.

But the Irish have covered the past two games overall, including the last meeting, a 78-62 win on Jan. 3 last season. Notre Dame easily covered the 8½-point home spread, while the score went under the total of 147½.

Notre Dame (21-5 SU, 10-13 ATS) defeated the Syracuse Orange 94-87 as a 6½-point favorite on Sunday. The score fell under the over/under total of 156½. The win ran Notre Dame’s homecourt winning streak to 36 straight games.

Kyle McAlarney scored a game-high 30 points for Notre Dame, while Rob Kurz added 15 points in the win.

The Cardinals (22-6 SU, 16-9-1 ATS) edged the Pittsburgh Panthers 75-73 as a 1-point favorite on Sunday. The score went over the total of 131.

David Padgett scored a game-high 21 points for Louisville, while Edgar Sosa added 18 points in the win.

The game starts at 7 pm ET and can be seen on ESPN.
